Governor
| | Blunt "Who Is It?"

When Democrat Claire McCaskill defeated unpopular incumbent governor Bob Holden in Missouri’s Democratic primary, some observers thought it would be more difficult for Republicans to win the governor’s race. But Secretary of State Matt Blunt ran a disciplined campaign that stressed his positive agenda on education, jobs and tort reform, and exposed the differences between Claire McCaskill’s rhetoric and her actions. Further, it directly linked her positions to those of the unpopular Bob Holden. By Election Day, McCaskill’s negatives hovered near 40% and Matt Blunt won nearly by 85,000 votes. Blunt carried virtually every rural country in Missouri- precisely the areas where McCaskill performed well in the primary. In some of those counties, Blunt received almost 80% of the vote. Governor Blunt’s election gave the Republicans one of their two pickups of Democratic-held gubernatorial seats in 2004. One spot from the campaign was the winner of the 2004 gold medal (first place) Pollie Award in the gubernatorial category.
"SRCP was an intricate component in my victory. Their advertising and grasp of the issues that are important to Missouri really helped make the difference in a tight campaign. They produced tremendous ads and provided insightful strategy. I value their advice and counsel and look forward to their assistance in my future efforts." Governor Matt Blunt, MO
